A pallet cover is the solution for optimal transport conditions

Keeping fresh produce at temperature for an extended period of time can be quite a challenge. This is especially true for relatively long shipments where goods are exposed to extreme external conditions. Many fresh products are sensitive not only to light and moisture, but also to high or irregular temperatures. A pallet cover offers the solution when transporting products at a low and constant temperature. This way you ensure that your products retain their quality during transport.

What is a pallet cover?

A pallet cover is a bag that is slid completely around a filled pallet. This protects the contents from outside temperature influences. The outside of Coolpack’s pallet covers has a high-quality aluminum coating that enhances the insulating effect of the pallet cover. In addition, this coating ensures that heat energy and radiation are reflected on the outside. The same thing happens on the inside of the pallet cover, but precisely with the cold air. Basically, the effect of a pallet cover can be compared to a sunshade on a car parked in the blazing sun. As a result, the temperature of your products can be kept at a better level with the help of a pallet cover.

The importance of optimal transport conditions

In the world of potatoes, fruits and vegetables (AGF), claims for rejected products are not rare. These are the products that do not reach the customer at the desired quality level. This is because these products are sensitive to temperature changes, light and moisture. When storage and transport conditions are not optimal, the quality of AGF can quickly deteriorate, resulting in rejects. This quickly affects 20-30% of the total cargo. It is therefore of great importance that the transport conditions for your AGF are as optimal as possible:

  • Potatoes: after harvesting, potatoes are usually stored in cold storage immediately to cover any time until transport. It is important for potatoes to be kept cool, dry and dark. This is because light stimulates the formation of solalin, a natural toxin. This can cause green spots to appear on the potatoes. Transport and storage at the right temperature is therefore crucial for maintaining the quality of potatoes. Too low a temperature causes a change in taste. Too high temperature and moisture cause mold and sprouts. Usually the optimal storage temperature is around 8 degrees, but this can vary by potato variety.
  • Vegetables: transport and storage conditions also have a great influence on the quality maintenance of vegetables. For example, you can think of fragile vegetables such as lettuce. Optimal transport and storage conditions may vary for each vegetable type, but all vegetables should be kept cool, dry and dark.
  • Soft fruit: because soft fruit is harvested when it is (almost) ripe, it is very fragile. Therefore, it should be stored immediately chilled. Moisture can cause mold to develop. Soft fruit is therefore packed in cardboard boxes because it absorbs moisture. In addition, it must be transported at a low temperature. The optimum chilling temperature can vary by type of fruit.

Create the optimal transport condition with a pallet cover

For AGF in particular, quality is best maintained when transported within a temperature range of 0 to 8 degrees. Stability in the temperature range is very important. Furthermore, the space in which the goods are transported should preferably be dry and dark, to prevent such things as mold formation.

Transport with gel packs

For transporting goods within a temperature range of 0 to 8 degrees, gel packs or gel pack strings offer an excellent solution. Gel packs are ideally suited for transporting goods with transport times up to 48 hours (depending on external conditions) refrigerated. Because they can be discarded after use if necessary, gel packs lend themselves well to refrigerated transports without a return procedure. This is usually the case with AGF.

Minimize surface condensation during transport

To minimize surface condensation during transport, it is recommended to use the No sweat gel packs. For moisture-sensitive products such as AGF products, these gel packs are a good option because the products themselves remain as dry as possible during transport.

Combining a pallet cover with refrigerants

Fruit and vegetables are often transported on Euro or block pallets. To achieve temperature stability and keep the goods cool for a longer period of time, refrigerants can be combined with pallet covers. This creates a kind of mobile refrigerator, so to speak. This protects the fragile products from external influences during transport.

The applications of pallet covers

Pallet covers can be used both to keep products that need to be shipped cool and to keep products that need to be shipped warm. Pallet covers are made in one piece. As a result, in the case of refrigerated shipping, warm air cannot find its way to the goods being shipped. It is wise to also cover the bottom of the pallet properly so that warm air cannot find any way to access the fragile products. This way, your goods can stay refrigerated for a long time, without the need for electricity during transport. This gives you the flexibility to transport your goods sequentially using different means of transportation. For example, pallet covers are frequently used during airplane transportation.

Coolpack’s pallet covers

Our pallet covers are made of high-density compact film. This ensures a higher insulation value of the covers. Due to their proven quality, goods remain at a stable temperature even during long-term transportation and regardless of extreme external conditions.

Chilled airplane transport to Shanghai with Coolpack’s pallet covers

By a large customer of ours, the pallet covers are used for plane transports to Shanghai. Here the pallets are exposed to widely varying ambient temperatures. You can think for example of loading the plane, transferring the pallets to a truck or standing still in the arrival hall. To give a good idea of the importance of pallet covers, we monitored the temperature during this transport. The conclusion? The use of a pallet cover enables long transports under a lower and more stable temperature.
