Deploying gel packs for refrigerated transport

Gel packs are leak-proof polyethylene bags filled with polymer-based cooling gel. They are used for refrigerated or conditioned transport of goods. With gel packs you can easily ensure that your products arrive at their destination in perfect condition. Because gel packs are widely applicable in logistics, our customers use our gel packs throughout Europe. Sectors in which gel packs are frequently used are the food industry (for example meat, fish and AGF), the medical sector(pharmacy and blood transport) and the flower sector. In this article you can read what gel packs are and how they can help you with refrigerated transport.

The viscosity of the cooling gel

The thickness (also called viscosity) of the cooling gel is very important. If the gel is too thick, it heats up too quickly. But if the gel is too thin, the gel pack will leak faster in case of minor damage. We make the gel ourselves and perform quality checks daily. This allows us to guarantee consistent quality.

Guaranteed 100% safe

The film and gel we use for our gel packs meet the most stringent requirements and demands for packaging in the food industry.

The different types of gel packs from Coolpack

At Coolpack, we have a wide range of gel packs. For example, you can choose from our original gelpack, kraft gelpack, no sweat gelpack, segmented gelpack, PA-PE gelpack, traypack gelpack and ice pack. These gel packs are available in a variety of standard sizes. All gel packs are manufactured on site at Coolpack. Should the size you require not be among them, it is possible to have the gel packs custom manufactured for you. Moreover, you can choose to have the gel packs printed with your own design. For more information or advice you can always contact us. Our experts are happy to think along with you.

Original gel pack

Our original gel packs are typically used for shipments of up to 24 hours. Depending on the type of packaging and the amount of refrigeration, longer shipments can also be bridged well. The regular gel packs are designed to transport goods between 0 and 8 degrees. For other temperature ranges, Phase Change Material can be a solution.

Phase Change Material (PCM).

By filling the gel pack with Phase Change Materials (PCM), you can transport goods within a small and stable temperature range. PCM is a collective term for all materials that can change phase. This filling is distinguished by an addition of a substance, such as salt, glycones and/or kerosene. The different substances allow for different melting/solidification points. This makes it possible to cool a gel pack to -21 or, on the contrary, raise the solidification point to +20 degrees Celsius.

Coolpack’s experts will be happy to help you determine which temperature range is appropriate for your application.

Kraft gel pack

Kraft gel packs are characterized by a kraft paper layer on the outside. Kraft paper is strong and durable. This is because the long paper fibers are pressed together very tightly, creating a high density. The durable appearance of this gel pack is the reason many companies choose this product.

No sweat gel pack

No sweat gel packs are the ideal solution for shipping products that are moisture and temperature sensitive. This innovative gel pack is designed with the goal of minimizing surface condensation. This makes them very suitable for use in both Styrofoam boxes and cardboard boxes. The bag of the gelpack consists of multiple layers, with an envelope of non-woven material. This casing absorbs the condensation created during transport. This ensures that moisture-sensitive products reach their destination in the optimal condition.

Segmented gel pack

Segmented gel packs, also known as switched gel packs, are gel packs that consist of two or three different compartments. The advantage of these gel packs is that they are more flexible. This allows them to be easily folded around the goods to be transported, keeping them optimally cooled. A great example of this is the gelpack strings. This long switched gelpack can be folded around a pallet. This allows the pallet to be optimally cooled.

Segmented gel packs can be properly sized to fit an EPS (tempex) box. This allows the entire contents to be covered with a gel pack. Thus, a product can be completely packed in a cube to achieve optimal cooling results. This is why these gel packs are particularly used in the medical sector, for example, when transporting blood tubes.

PA-PE gel pack

PA-PE gel packs are extra strong gel packs because they have a thicker casing. The film consists of three layers, with the inner and outer layers being made of polyethylene. The middle layer is made of polyamide so that the gel pack is less fragile. For example, these gel packs will be more resistant to sharp objects.

Traypack gel pack

The Traypack gel pack differs from the gel packs mentioned above in a few ways.
