Using ice packs optimally for refrigerated transport
“How can ice packs be optimally used to transport goods at the right temperature?” is a question our customers regularly ask us. In this article, we explain this step by step.
Here’s how to use ice packs for your refrigerated transport
Ice packs are delivered as empty sheets. They have to be filled with water yourself. This is very simple because you only have to immerse them in water. The sheets fill up with water, which then mixes with the same kind of powder found in normal gel packs. This creates the thick cooling gel inside the icepacks. You can then simply freeze this and use it. The advantage is that you can store many icepack sheets because they take up much less space than the gel packs. However, it does take more time before you can use them.

It is important that ice packs are completely frozen. Ice packs can be ready for refrigerated transport of your products within one to three days. There is a difference between ice packs delivered in boxes and crates. Crates have the advantage of optimal air permeability. The boxes that Coolpack supplies for ice packs also have air holes. In a freezer, cold air is pumped around. The better this air reaches the ice packs the faster they freeze. Only when the ice pack is properly frozen is it suitable for refrigerated transport of your goods. If you need the ice packs urgently and need to freeze a pallet of ice packs as quickly as possible, we recommend breaking up the pallet or placing the boxes in such a way that the cold air can blow past the ice packs more easily and thus freeze them faster.
During the transport of your products, it is important that the ice pack is in an insulated environment, for example in an EPS box, this way the cargo remains optimally cooled.
